Brunel  Microscopes Christmas Gift Ideas

Microscopes as Gifts

At this time of year we frequently have partners, parents and grandparents wanting to buy a microscope or microscopy products as Christmas presents. This can be daunting if they have no first hand experience of microscopy. We are here to help. If you have time call us and we will be pleased to assist. This page contains links to fact sheet pages and advice about our more popular models. It is important to realise that there are basically two sorts of microscopes. Those made to look at microscope slides at high magnifications - called high power or compound microscopes and those for looking at whole objects (no need for slides) at low magnifications - called stereomicroscopes. A brief description of both types is below or you may like to have more detailed information from our fact sheet;

Choosing a Microscope

We pride ourselves on our speed of delivery - even at this time of year, and you can place orders in our Online Secure Shop up to and including Sunday 22 December and still receive them in time for Christmas. Next day delivery is by Interlink Express within the UK and if you let us have your mobile telephone number you should receive a text shortly before arrival. International orders of course take a little longer and we would advise Saturday 14 December as the last day.

High power or Compound microscopes are used to view thin sections of objects such as plant and animal structures, or parts of objects such as insect legs, or objects that are themselves microscopic - such as pond life or blood cells. They do not have a depth of field and cannot be used for looking at whole objects. The magnification range of most ranges from x40 to x1000.

Compound microscopes can be monocular (one eyepiece), binocular (two eyepieces) or even trinocular (three eyetubes with the third one being for a camera). The binocular is recommended for those who intend doing a lot of microscopy work - to avoid eyestrain, and the trinocular for those wishing to take a lot of photographs. However it is also possible to take photographs with a monocular or binocular microscope but you cannot look down them at the same time as the camera. Binocular and trinocular microscopes are of course more expensive. These types of microscope can only be used to view slide preparations and specially made and stained slides can be purchased for beginners and complete slide making kits for the enthusiast who wants to make their own slides. Below are four of our most popular covering a range of prices, but there are many more options in the rest of this web site.

Compound or High Power Microscopes

Brunel SP22

The SP22 magnification range of x40 to x1000. LED lighting with brightness control and mechanical stage. Ideal for microscope slides.  Price £127

Brunel SP22 Microscope

The objectives of the high power microscopes listed above need to be very close to the specimen for it to be in focus (1-2mm) - too close to allow light to shine down on the surface of a specimen. They also have virtually no depth of focus. The stereomicroscopes shown below however are designed to look at whole objects without the need for slides, but at relatively low magnifications. These low power microscopes are made to have a very long working distance - often upto 100mm and a good depth of focus. They are extremely easy to use and require no specimen preparation. Unfortunately because of the Laws of Physics it is not possible to have a microscope that can carry our both of these functions. The low power stereomicroscopes shown below are ideal for looking at whole objects of any type.
