Hand held ‘video microscopes’ are now very common, and many are offered at prices that cannot be expected to deliver a quality image, or be robust in construction. However the cheaper ones are without doubt fun but do not give good resolution or have intuitive software.
The Dino-Lite series on the other hand are made for professional applications with a wide range of supporting accessories and image capture software that can be used with both Windows and Apple computers. There is even a Dinolight for analogue television use. What is impressive about these instruments is the thought that has gone into their design, with units modified for very specific applications. All have common features:
■ Magnification and focus wheel allowing a continuous zoom magnification and in some cases a fixed option - depending on the model.
■ Robust composite or aluminium alloy housing.
■ Built in LED lighting (8 white LEDs) that is controlled by the software.
■ Crystal clear 1280 x 1024 images.
■ Dinocapture software allows still image, video and time lapse image capture, and accurate measurement and calibration on selected models.
■ High speed USB 2 .0 interface.

Dino-
The long working distance makes this unit ideal for repair, rework or assembly tasks that require a good working distance from the object. The zoom magnification is from x10 to x92. This particular model has a detachable cap that allows special caps such as the 45 degree mirror, making it possible to view objects at 90 degrees. This is useful for examining the side wall of tubes or holes holes and printed circuit boards from low angles. The software has measurement and calibration options (line, radius, circle etc.)

Dino-Lite TV
This Dino-Lite model is connected to a television (PAL) rather than a computer. This can be a major advantage where real time images are vital such as working on PCB’s or other micro construction work. The unit has a polarising filter to remove glare from metallic surfaces. Zoom magnification from x10 to x50 together with a fixed x200. Available for the TV unit is a portable digital recorder. The recorder has a 3.5 inch LCD panel for live display and pictures and videos can be recorder onto a SD memory card (2Gb)for transfer to computer. The two make an excellent combination.

The build quality and finish of this equipment is excellent, and specific application units are available for examining the micro circulation of the nail bed (Nailscope), attached to a dental mirror (Dentalscope), for iris examination - this unit has 2 side illuminating LEDs (Iriscope) and equipped with a special cap for examining hair (Scalpscope)
